The Best Beaches in Gran Canaria

12 standout Gran Canaria beaches, from the urban lagoon of Las Canteras in Las Palmas to the sheltered southern coves around Arguineguín — grouped by coast, with access and family notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated July 2026

Gran Canaria packs a whole continent's worth of coastline into one round island, and the water changes dramatically with the compass. The east holds the cities: Playa de Las Canteras, the great urban beach of Las Palmas, is protected by an offshore reef that turns it into a calm, shallow lagoon. The south and southwest are sheltered from the trade winds, with tranquil fishing-village coves like Playa de Arguineguín. The west is rugged and wild, where the open Atlantic pounds secluded dark-sand beaches such as Guayedra. Browse every verified beach on the island in Gran Canaria.

This is a curated best-of rather than the full list — choose a coast below, then check each beach page for access and sea-state before you set off. A rental car reaches nearly all of them, though the city beaches of Las Palmas are walkable. For hand-picked sets spanning all the islands, see our best beaches collection.

    Las Palmas city beaches

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has two very different urban beaches. Playa de Las Canteras is a long golden strand facing the Atlantic but sheltered by a natural offshore reef, La Barra, which breaks the waves into a calm, shallow lagoon; it is split into three zones, with the most protected water near the reef. Around the headland, Playa de Las Alcaravaneras is the city's sandy harbour beach, sheltered by the port and breakwaters into calm water that suits swimming and beginner windsurfing, with amenities and city views on hand.

    The sheltered south and east

The southern and eastern coasts sit in the lee of the island, so their coves stay calm. In the fishing village of Arguineguín, the pebbly Playa de Arguineguín has clear, protected water good for swimming and snorkelling, while the golden-sand Playa de la Lajilla in the same port is a calm, family-friendly spot beside local amenities. Nearby Playa de Faneroque and Playa La Carrera are quieter dark-sand coves sheltered from the trade winds. Further round the southeast, Playa de Arinaga sits in a sheltered bay by its fishing village, and the low-key Playa Hoya del Pozo on the east coast offers a quiet, uncrowded stretch of dark sand.

The wild west and windward north

The exposed west and north are for those who like their coast raw. On the west coast, Playa de la Aldea is a secluded dark-sand beach that turns surfable when the Atlantic swell rolls in, and Guayedra is a remote sandy bay reached by a winding road, prized for its seclusion but best left to strong swimmers. On the northwest shore, Playa San Felipe is an unspoiled dark-sand beach with strong waves and currents, while the small north-coast cove of Playa El Roquete mixes dark sand and pebbles and calms down in summer, though currents still call for care.
