The Best Beaches in El Hierro

12 standout El Hierro beaches, from the sheltered dive village of La Restinga to the wild dark sand of El Verodal — grouped by coast, with access and swimming notes.

Curated by the Beach Atlas team · Updated July 2026

El Hierro is the smallest and most remote of the western Canaries — a young volcanic island of black cliffs, lava flows and wild dark-sand coves. There are no resort beaches here; the safest swimming is in a handful of sheltered harbours and cliff-backed coves, while the open north and west coasts take the full force of the Atlantic. The dive village of Playa de La Restinga in the far south is the island's calm-water hub. Browse every verified beach on the island in El Hierro.

Almost everything needs a car and a careful read of the sea state, and several beaches are for looking rather than swimming. This is a curated best-of — pick a coast below and check each beach page for access and conditions before you set out, or compare more of the archipelago on the best beaches pages and the map.

Sheltered swims: La Restinga and the northeast

El Hierro's calmest water sits behind harbour walls and in tucked-away coves. Playa de La Restinga is a small, sheltered dark-sand beach in the southern fishing and diving village of the same name, protected by a harbour and breakwater with clear water that is ideal for swimming and snorkelling, backed by a lively promenade of restaurants and dive shops. On the northeast coast, Playa de Puerto de la Estaca is a calm little beach inside the island's main port, and Bahía de Timijiraque is a sheltered sandy bay that is one of the island's most popular swims. The small black-sand cove of Playa de las Calcosas, sheltered by cliffs on the north coast, is another quiet, unspoiled option when the sea is calm.

    The wild west coast

The west coast is El Hierro at its most dramatic. Playa del Verodal is a striking wild, dark-sand beach reached by a winding road, exposed to the full Atlantic with strong currents that make swimming dangerous but views over the Roque de la Bonanza unforgettable. Nearby, Playa Los Llanillos is a black-sand beach with strong, consistent waves that draw surfers, and Playa de los Negros is a remote black-sand cove with steady swell — both scenery-first, calm-day-only spots.

    The rugged north coast

The north coast is exposed to the trade winds and mostly wild. Playa Brava lives up to its name with dark volcanic sand and strong Atlantic swells, Playa de la Arena is a cliff-backed black-sand beach where you should swim only with caution, and the pebble beaches of Las Playas and Playa de las Almorranas see moderate to rough surf that suits contemplation more than bathing. Playa de Miguel rounds out the coast as a natural, roadside stop with moderate, changeable conditions.
