Calm-water beaches in Gran Canaria sit on the leeward south and east coasts, where the island mass shelters them from the open-Atlantic swell and the prevailing north-easterly trade winds (the alisios). They are the safest, most predictable beaches for relaxed swimming, snorkelling, paddleboarding and bringing small children into the water — and a world apart from the powerful surf of the exposed north and west.
